Red, White, & Blue Star by Ruth

Copyright 2007 Ruth Perry

This pretty three color star is tatted in three rows, each a diffrent color. It measures about an inch in diameter when tatted in Anchor size 12 Pearle, which I bought in Spokane WA at the Shuttlebirds tat days in April.

The secret in tatting with rows of different colors is to use the previous row thread for the core thread, and the new color as the ball thread. Rows 2 & 3 are just chains with shuttle lock joins. With care you can avoid the "spots" of different color that happen when joining different colors.

Row 1

Row 2

Use the shuttle thread from row 1 and add the second color as the ball thread.
Chain ( 1 - 5 + 3 - 3 + 5 - 1 )
*
Join in the base of the next ring of row 1
Chain ( 1 + 5 + 3 - 3 + 5 - 1 )
* Repeat around between * *

Row 3

Use the ball thread from row 2 as the shuttle thread and add the third color as the new ball thread.
Chain ( 10 + 3 - 3 + 10 )
Join to the picots of row 2 as shown
Repeat around, Tie like color thread ends together, hide and trim close to the piece.
